Overview

General

Each summer, ACF sponsors and connects approximately 20 interns to host organizations around the state that need additional capacity to carry out their goals of preserving and protecting Alaska’s environment. ACF administers the Conservation Internship Program and essentially provides a recruitment service to conservation organizations offering internships. ACF also provides grants to host organizations to help defray the costs of salary and travel expenses related to hosting an intern.

ACF is limited each summer in the number of organizations that it can provide an intern to.  If you are interested in becoming a host organization please contact us.

Internship Experience

Internships are designed to benefit both the host organization and the intern. While interns help the organization to meet its goals, the internship should be structured to:

  • Offer career-oriented, educational internship experiences to undergraduate students, graduate students, and recent college graduates who plan a career path in conservation, environmental justice, or a closely related field.
  • Provide a unique opportunity for interns to learn firsthand about Alaska’s magnificent natural environment, diverse cultural heritage, issues Alaska faces as well as the extraordinary opportunities for progressive and sustainable change.
  • Cultivate meaningful and practical job skills (in the field) including network opportunities with Alaska conservationists, agency personnel, local Alaskans, and other interns from Alaska and across the nation.

Duration

Internships are 12 weeks in duration, take place in the summer and commence in May or June.  Exact dates are negotiated between successful applicants and host organizations.

Financial Support

ACF provides a stipend of approximately $4,000 for the 12-week internship.  This amount is provided directly to the host organization in the form of a grant and it is in turn paid to the intern as taxable salary.

ACF will also cover travel expenses for interns to and from their school or home to their host organization locations in Alaska.  Specific details of this travel expense reimbursement process are currently under review and will be communicated later this winter.

For interns able to attend the in-person orientation in Anchorage in June, ACF will cover the expenses of the travel to and from the host organizations that are not located in Anchorage.
