About the report
Alaska, like other hardrock mineral-producing states, faces the challenge of supporting the mining industry while ensuring robust environmental, economic, and social protections. This report compares Alaska’s regulations to those in other states, offering recommendations to enhance safeguards, including strengthened public and Tribal participation to ensure those most affected by mining projects are meaningfully included in decision-making. The comprehensive study, funded by Alaska Conservation Foundation, found that states like Minnesota, California, and Nevada have stronger environmental safeguards, financial accountability measures, and public participation requirements for mining operations.
